Greenwashing is a take off of white washing.  Greenwashing plays to our desires enticing us to buy without question.  By promoting a "green product," manufacturers are appealing to our desire to do the right thing environmentally knowing that the average consumer does not fully understand what "green" is.  Seldom is there readily available supporting data to back up the claims of green.

Product promotions and marketing provide an image of green.  The graphics are often peaceful and serene scenes with a soothing voice over talking about being committed to the environment.  The product is shown at the end of the commercial implying that the product is environmentally friendly.  Think back - did the speaker every say the product reduces negative health or environmental impacts?  Does the advertisement claim an environmental certification?  If so, do you know the certifying agency or it a self-certification or, perhaps, only a membership in an environmental organization?

Next time the commercial is aired, listen carefully to what is not said.  Check out the claims made or not made.  Email the manufacturer to provide supporting data for its claims.  Research the manufacturer to determine if it has an environmental policy and for how long.  If you are not satisfied with the answers or can’t find them, call the manufacturer and ask.  Don't get side tracked.
