Touted as the healthy alternative to white bread many people switch to wheat bread in attempt to maintain a healthy lifestyle.  Unfortunately wheat bread is no longer the health food that it used to be and can be linked to headaches, digestive disturbances, respiratory issues and skin irritations, as well as many other health concerns.

The Mayo Clinic currently ranks wheat in its list of top food allergens.  To learn more about wheat intolerances visit Wheat-Free Org.

But don’t despair you don’t have to deprive yourself of breads, pastas and pastry items in order to avoid wheat this holiday season.  Sprouted grains (including sprouted wheat) from Food for Life are a great option as well products made with brown rice, quinoa, flax, and spelt such as the wheat-free, gluten-free biscotti from Aunt Gussie's crackers from Mary's Gone Crackers or baking mixes from Cherrybrook Ktichen.

Re: Skip the Wheat for Better Health

Hear Hear! Wheat has been touted way too much as an ultimate health food. Toxic molds love to grow on it during storage and also during damp growing seasons. They have a direct affinity for wheat. Toxic molds (mycotoxins) are believed to be one of the main reasons for a lot of the disturbances mentioned in this article. Even ingested in small amounts over the course of months or years can pose a health risk. In high numbers, they can cause liver and kidney disease and even death.
About two years ago mycotoxins were to blame for over 150 dogs dying as a result of eating contaminated dog food. This is a very present concern for not only dogs and cats, but for humans as well. Are we to assume that every grain storage facility is going to adequately maintain a constant safe moisture content of stored grain? I don't feasibly see how they could when it is stored in huge silos that are constantly subjected to heating and cooling throughout the year. Couple this fact with the above information of how it looooooves to grow on this particular grain more than some others and we have a very questionable commodity.
Grains are being blamed for a lot of poor health in animals, but not all grains are suspect. The true problem is storage, quality, glycemic index, and the fact that many companies are not adequately testing for contamination of ingredients from mycotoxins. This also goes for companies producing human products.
There are safer sources of grains, and I agree that sprouted grain products are much healthier. Our bodies utilize sprouted grains much differently. The enzymes present in sprouted grains aid in digestion and overall health. Unsprouted sources of whole wheat can actually bind with minerals in the small intestine and block absorption which can lead to deficiency of these vital nutritional substances!
