We hope you have given some thought to our last blog concerning the notion of slowing down to reconnect with yourself and others.  Without that simple first step, it is somewhat difficult to really connect with our food source.  While our grocery store aisles are laden with packaged, processed foods, our farmers markets give us a plethora of nourishment including local and seasonal vegetables, meats, fish and artisan breads, cheeses and other staples.  It is such an amazing experience to really connect with the farmer that has lovingly grown and raised your food.  Beyond the connection, you have the security of knowing exactly where your food source comes from. You can ask questions and secure future orders – and, simply enjoy a day outside. With all the scares of food security that we hear in the news these days, it is very comforting to know that we can track our food back to the source.  Further, the farmer will also tell you how the produce is grown and how the animals have been raised.  Often times a farmer grows their food organically, but does not have a USDA certification, which is a pricy endeavor for them to go through.  If you can’t make it to a farmers market, find out from your local grocer if they carry produce from your local farmers.  Whole Foods Market now offers many local products and denotes each of them with a local label.  Publix Supermarket chain will often take product requests including organic and locally-grown foods. You never know until you ask – isn’t that what your neighborhood grocery store is there for anyhow?

Re: Connecting with your food source

It is so important to know where your food comes from. Too often, it is the case that we adopt the "out of sight, out of mind" mentality or "what we don't know won't hurt you". This is so far from the truth. Take the example of consuming animal products. If the animals are raised inhumanely, being subjected to living conditions and being fed in a ways that go against nature, they suffer in more ways than one. If we in turn ingest their meat or byproducts it is inevitable that we too, will be affected by the negative conditions in which they are raised.
