The subject of shopping for a greener lifestyle raises a question to me about the abundance of boxed, commercially prepared foods that are stocked on the shelves of the supermarkets in this country. Even the in the popular Whole Foods chain the shelves are cluttered with these pseudo-organic products. I mean just because an item says that it has "organic" ingredients, doesn't mean it is a health food. Everyone needs to realize that the shopping that perpetuates the greenest lifestlye is done at local farmer's markets, at best, or at the very least is done on the perimeter isles of the local supermarket store.

Are there any 'safe' organic boxed products or prepared foods? I once heard that all of the prepared foods offered in the deli of Whole Foods isnt even really organic. It was claimed that Whole Foods capitalizes off of an assumed perception by their consumers/shoppers that anything they offer is organic and whole. THen they mark it up 5 times based further on this assumption. How are we to trust any supermarket? It is simply not feasible to avoid shopping at them for the majority of us.

In my opinion there are certainly boxed products that are worthy of eating. However, our reliance on these foods remains too high. We need to take time to plan our meals to shy away from these commercially prepared options. All ready made food products should be a last resort, not a staple.
I have noticed a growing trend for "regular" grocery food chains expanding their selection of organic products. I visited a grocery store chain in a small town in North Carolina recnetly that had an impressive selection of organic foods, even the packaged varities. Good news! I was pleasantly surprised.
