I'm sure that this posting will surely get some feedback because of its nature, but I think that it is important to discuss the implications for large multi-national corporations and the steps they take towards social responsibility and decreasing their footprint. Walmart is often the debate and target of many environmental, labor and social justice groups due to its current procedures. However, what would happen if every Walmart throughout the world ensured that every farmer they bought from was paid a fair wage? Every Walmart built from here on out only used clean energy, and sustainable & non-toxic building materials? What if they made even just the smallest step and changed their toilet paper to recycled? Perhaps this is trivial, but think of the ripple effect. it is more important for the global community to make demands of large corporations rather than constantly putting negative energy into it. Bottom line is a corporation such as Walmart is simply not going away. You have the choice not to shop there or any other large corporation for that matter, but begin to put your energy where it counts.

The Ripple Effect is such an important point here. Wal-Mart sucks, but you are right - they arent going away, so how can we help them make even small changes towards sustainable practices that will affect the masses? I once read an article about Wal-Mart's sustainability initiative sin which they did a study on one small change that had a huge impact: bathroom toilet paper of all things! They started using recycled paper products and conducted an impact analysis (in various ways). Who would have thought?

My husband and I work 2 jobs each and we now have a combined family of 7 (including my mother-in-law). We want to live a healthier lifestyle, but are challenged with a small budget and no time. Wal-Mart has opened many doors for me as far as being able to find and afford organic products - even tee-shirts. My friends often make fun of me when sporting my organic tee because they think it is ironic that I purchased there. To me, I have no other choice and I am taking all the steps I can do to make better choices.

So many greenies bash big box retailers like walmart. But it is indeed a fact of life they are not going away. The simple fact that Wal-mart offfers organic options to consumers is crucial in raising awareness. We have to start somewhere and why not go for the biggest bang?
