Children are so impressionable. By teaching them green habits now they will be more likely to stick with them for life. Last year for Earthday, my daughter's Brownie Troop spent the whole month of April learning about being environmentally responsible. So much about what we covered in those meetings is repeated to me throughout the year by these little girls. Even the parents have shared with me how the girls have taken on the challenge.

I totally agree with you. Children are very impressionable and they end up teaching their family the right things to do for our environment. Our obvious challenge when it comes to education in schools is to get the administrators on board to bring these concepts to the classroom. It can be so discouraging when schools only begin focusing on students passing standardized tests and never teaching students about humane education, social issues or the environment.

You are so right. Not in the classrooms or anywhere within the school can you find efforts to conserve or be environmentally responsible. The schools really don't teach our children much at all it that regard. In fact quite the opposite. Not long ago I visited my child's school during lunch. I could not believe my eyes when I witnessed all the recyclable items that were just tossed into the trash. Everything from plastic cups and containers to aluminum cans and packaged food item. Some of which weren't even opened. It totally contradicts all the good habits we try to teach our children.

I applaud you for taking notice of the lunchroom indiscretions. Now I think it's time to do more than sit back and take notice. I challenge you to take action. What steps can you take to facilitate change in your child's school and make a difference?
